Reassessing Attention in an Era of Distraction

Published Nov 01, 2019 Reads 475 By Will Richardson

Exploring the challenges of maintaining present-moment awareness while navigating modern distractions, particularly in educational contexts.

Rediscovering the Present

A recent trip to a local bookstore served as a striking reminder of the tactile pleasure that print books provide. My wife and I, avid readers, have found ourselves increasingly relying on digital formats; our collection of eBooks on Kindles is growing faster than our physical library. This shift presents a duality—while the accessibility of eBooks is unmatched, it's somehow still disheartening. Walking through the aisles of books dedicated to philosophy and self-help, it struck me just how much wisdom can often be distilled to three simple words: "Be here now."

The Challenge of Presence

This idea of mindfulness—being fully engaged in the moment—is fundamental to living a fulfilling life. Yet, it’s a concept many grapple with daily, often trapped in cycles of reminiscing about the past or worrying about the future. For me, it’s a personal challenge, and perhaps others share this struggle. Our mental resources often stray to concerns beyond our control, or we create narratives that lack substantive grounding.

The Impact of Modern Distractions

In this modern age, the situation is exacerbated by FOMO, drawing our attention away from our current experiences. It raises pertinent questions: Are we losing the ability to concentrate? If so, how can we nurture the capacity to remain present in our lives or support our students in doing the same?

These inquiries are at the heart of our discussions in the Modern Learners Community and our upcoming podcasts, where we turn our focus to the theme of attention.

Childhood and the Gift of Presence

Observing young children reveals that they inherently live in the moment, fully immersed in their surroundings. Watching the neighborhood kids play with abandon, it's clear they possess an innate ability to engage deeply with their experiences. This raises further questions regarding the conditions that foster such engagement. In educational settings, are we cultivating environments that nurture or hinder this essential skill?

Mindfulness in Schools: A Double-Edged Sword

As schools increasingly adopt mindfulness practices, there’s an ongoing debate regarding their efficacy. I once witnessed a large group of middle school students fall silent at the sound of a gong, a momentarily compelling instance of collective stillness. However, I remain skeptical that mindfulness alone is the solution. A recent interview with Ronald Purser, author of the book McMindfulness, questioned the effectiveness of these practices, highlighting how they often serve to maintain existing power structures instead of fostering genuine change.

“Nothing has been overturned or transformed as the result of mindfulness. And nothing will be.”

Reframing Our Focus

This critique suggests that we should reconsider where we place our attention. Instead of merely training students to manage their minds amidst a chaotic educational atmosphere, a more significant effort should be directed toward reshaping the systems that contribute to this chaos. For instance, rigid schedules and mandated curricula can severely detract from a student’s ability to be engaged. To cultivate that deep presence, we need to investigate how educational structures might inhibit it.

The Bigger Picture

Of course, the challenges surrounding attention extend beyond the classroom, embedded in larger societal narratives. Nevertheless, educators and institutions play a crucial role in addressing these issues, especially as distractions and uncertainties proliferate. It invites a re-examination of our contributions to these challenges. If we want to genuinely assist students in navigating this increasingly distracting world, we might first look inward at how our practices could be part of the problem.

I'd be eager to hear your thoughts on these matters or any questions about the importance of attention in today’s context.
